The happiness that meets you

The kind of happiness that comes towards you. The place where heaven and earth seem to meet, and where happiness quietly begins. What helps us move closer to it? Gratitude is one of the keys. Often it leads to less stress, and a little more lightness.

When we practise gratitude, the brain’s reward system is activated and dopamine and serotonin increase, the so-called happiness hormones. Stress can soften, and a sense of wellbeing begins to grow.

Gratitude and wonder are deeply connected. Dacher Keltner describes how wonder helps us feel more gratitude, because it makes us aware of the beauty and goodness around us. When you allow yourself to wonder, you realise again how remarkable life can be. And gratitude often follows.

What small step could you take today to nurture gratitude, and with it, perhaps a little more happiness?

Maybe today can hold one moment of wonder. To really live in the here and now. If you notice something beautiful, pause there for a moment instead of passing it by.

As an outdoor psychologist, I would love to walk with you in that journey of wonder. I took this photo while out walking, amazed by the way the light touched the trees. Gratitude washed over me. To be grateful in the here and now, that is something I wish for you too.
