Resistance deepens suffering
Resistance deepens suffering. Awareness can open a path towards freedom. The moment we begin to see how we react to pain, something essential appears: the possibility of choice.
We can go with the reaction... or not.
But when we remain trapped in resistance towards what hurts, suffering often grows.
Our survival brain switches on automatically, not to work against us, but to protect us.
It tends to move in three familiar directions:
🥶 Freeze -> often leading to rumination Antidote: an open, curious gaze
😡 Fight -> often leading to self-criticism and self-blame Antidote: gentleness and compassion
😨 Flight -> often leading to withdrawal and isolation Antidote: the felt sense of connection
This old system perceives danger. And when we dare to really face these mechanisms, space begins to appear.
Space to feel what is here. Space to choose which inner system we want to live from.
So often, we fight ourselves. And we fight others who question our convictions.
But real growth does not begin in struggle. It begins in meeting our inner resistance with attention, kindness and compassion.
👉 Which part of you reacts from survival? And what might happen if that part were met with compassionate gentleness?
If you would like to read more about this, the book Compassievol leven goes deeper into it. And if this feels difficult, I offer walking conversations through Sepora as an outdoor psychologist, helping you discover that compassionate inner voice.
Do you find this difficult and would you like to look at it together? Feel free to get in touch.
